On Sunday, Peter’s question in the Gospel of Matthew helps us explore the limits of forgiveness. How often should we forgive? One time, yes, we all would agree with doing that much. Two times even. We are, after all, fallible in a variety of ways. Three times? Well… Four or more times, and our fidgeting likely begins. Fallible though we certainly are, we expect that we can at least learn from our mistakes. But then, when you add forgiving ourselves to this consideration, the complexity rises geometrically. We begin to realize just how profound forgiveness is. As Hannah More put it, “Forgiveness is the economy of the heart…forgiveness saves the expense of anger, the cost of hatred, the waste of spirits.” See you at church!

Blessings, David
