“Isaiah Scroll,” found in a cave at Qumran, in the Museum of Israel, Jerusalem.

I love this image of the oldest manuscript of Isaiah in the world, for it dates to the time of, or just before, Jesus lived and moved and preached his first sermon. When you look at this image, you can see what he saw as he was given the scroll of Isaiah in the little synagogue in Nazareth. We will hear the passage from Luke chapter 4 on Sunday, the third Sunday of Epiphany. Christians celebrate this event as an epiphany because of what Jesus said after he finished reading the passage from Isaiah. “Today, this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” Join us on Sunday to hear this beautiful passage, and then to contemplate four words Luke used to describe Jesus.
