The image is “Life in Community,” by Aidan Hart and is found in the Saint Johns Bible.

Orthodox iconography is not a style of art most of us rely on to inspire our faith. It may seem distant, as if from a more ancient time than the early Renaissance. But this one of Life in Community makes me smile. It conveys order and peace, harmony and expectation. The icon makes me wonder why it was not entitled, “The Heavenly Community,” because I have not had many experiences of earthly community that look like this image. Fleeting glimpses of it, yes, but that is all. Much more often, life in community is hard. We disagree. We expect different things, and usually at different paces. Inevitably, our communities disappoint us, but even more, we cannot help but disappoint others. Yet in spite of all of this, the Church survives. Sometimes it even thrives! How can that be? Join us on Sunday as we hear the wisdom of one of the earliest missionaries of Jesus, and maybe find hope and encouragement to continue the journey together.

Blessings, David
