“Hen Gathers Her Brood,” in the Dominus Flevit Church, Jerusalem.

The Gospel passage we will hear on Sunday stands as a good reminder that we do well to be careful with our images for God. Should they always be male? Absolutely not! Should they always be triumphant and strong? Depends on what we mean by strength and what triumph looks like. After all, it was the Apostle Paul who wrote that he was comforted by God’s assurance “my strength is made perfect in weakness.” A chicken, a hen, as an image of God? Yes, according to Jesus. “How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings,…” Join us on Sunday to hear this and other passages, and then to contemplate the nature of God’s strength and the Good News that God knows anguish and longing just as we do.
