First Presbyterian Church of Urbana, a Member Church of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. and More Light Presbyterians

Higher Power Group

Welcome to the new “Higher Power” group.  We are exploring what acknowledging that there is a “higher power” means for us.

Here are key points about the group.

  1. It is supported by the First Presbyterian Church of Urbana, Illinois, but it is non-denominational.
  2. The main purpose of the group is to provide a place where people of any stripe or age can come together to talk about what it means to believe in a higher power.
  3. The group leadership comes from a “reformed Christian” background, but the group does not try to steer participants in a particular faith direction.  Rather, its purpose is to help participants to explore in a safe environment.
  4. Some participants will have had no or minimal religious background. For them, religious institutions can seem inscrutable or scary.  We do want to help demystify group religion but will not be pushing people to join a particular one.
  5. We have some curricular materials which can be helpful on our journeys, but there will be quite a bit of time just spent in getting to know each other and sharing our questions.

We will be meeting in the morning before work or classes, 7:30-8:15 AM.
