Photo: “The Great Catch,” by John August Swanson, 1993.

We find the story near the end of the Gospel of John. It’s after the Resurrection. Peter and a few of the other disciples have left Jerusalem and returned to the shore of the Sea of Galilee. They fish all night. Catch nothing. As they were coming back to shore after daybreak, they see a man on the shore who asks, “Ya’ll don’t have any fish, do you?” He directs them to drop the net again. This time, the net catches so many they can hardly bring it and all the fish back in the boat. Only then do they recognize that the man on the beach is Jesus. The disciples come ashore, and we can imagine the happy conversation as they all share shore breakfast. But John wants us to know that Jesus did not show up just to feed the disciples. He had some unfinished business with Peter. Forgiveness. Join us on Sunday to hear about this, as well as the forgiveness that was at work with the Apostle Paul and Ananias.
