“The image is of the oldest known mosaic of the Apostle Paul in Ravenna, Italy.”
Advent means “Coming.” It suggests something is about to be revealed. Something is about to happen. During these Advent days we look in two directions. We look back into the past to remember and give thanks for the first coming, the first Advent, of Jesus among us. We also look forward into the future in anticipation of the day when God will at long last come among us to bring peace, and justice, and wholeness, when all things will be as God intends. The good news we hear in these days is that there is no doubt about the day that is coming. God’s promises are dependable. Thanks be to God for that! Remembering this conviction will help us as we hear the scriptures on this upcoming Third Sunday of Advent, Gaudete Sunday, Rejoice Sunday. Looking at the shape of the world around us we may wonder how we can do this. How can we rejoice? By hearing the wisdom offered to us by the Apostle Paul which we will hear in the second reading. And by remembering that God’s promises are dependable. Join us on Sunday to hear and contemplate the Good News.
