Picture: “Peaceable Kingdom,” by John August Swanson

From the Pastor/Head of Staff

No other artist captures luminosity quite like John August Swanson. His art glows on the canvas or page. In “Peaceable Kingdom,” the warmth of the light coupled with the setting and the arrangement of the rich diversity of life all work together to radiate peace. It captures perfectly the prophetic vision of “what ought to be,” which we have been learning about during the mission study sessions. Such a beautiful image fills us with longing for the realm of peace because the realms in which we usually find ourselves aren’t peaceful. And that is true anywhere at least a few human beings get together. As one monk offered, “The hardest part of being a monk is other monks.” We are called into community as disciples, but life in community is so rarely easy, and too often not peaceful. Join us on Sunday as we contemplate a passage from Matthew’s Gospel where Jesus offers clear wisdom for life together.
