The image is of a statue, “The Contemplative Christ,” in Peksow Brzyzek Cemetery, Zakopane, Poland.
On my desk, I have a wooden carving patterned after this sculpture pictured here. My daughter, Clara, while she was living in Germany as an exchange student, gave it to me for Christmas that year. She bought it when she went with her school on a class trip to Poland. I have loved the style of the carving, as well as the expression on the face of Jesus. It conveys clearly that Jesus really was fully human. He knew fatigue. He needed to take time to think, to contemplate. The disciples did frustrate and disappoint him. Join us on Sunday as we hear the Gospel reading make clear that Jesus could still take the meager assets on hand and make what we might think is impossible entirely possible.
Blessings,
David
