The session shall have responsibility for governing the congregation and guiding its witness…, so that the congregation is and becomes a community of faith, hope, love, and witness.
– Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) Book of Order
In the Presbyterian Church (USA), the session is the elected, ordained, and installed council for the congregation. Those serving are called Ruling Elders. According to our Book of Order, the session is responsible for making sure the Word of God is preached regularly and faithfully, scheduling and administrating baptisms and the Lord’s Supper, and nurturing the congregation to be ever growing disciples of Jesus Christ. The Pastor moderates the Session meetings but does not vote on motions.
