This coming Sunday, we will sing one of the newest hymns in our hymnal. “For Everyone Born” was written by Shirley Erena Murray, the tune by Brian Mann, and was first published in a collection in the year 2000. What is the essence of the Gospel? What is Christianity 101? This hymn lays it out beautifully and clearly. The first verse and refrain are only the beginning:

For everyone born, a place at the table,
for everyone born, clean water and bread,
a shelter, a space, a safe place for growing,
for everyone born, a star overhead.

Refrain:
And God will delight when we are creators
of justice and joy, compassion and peace;
yes, God will delight when we are creators
of justice, justice, and joy.

Seems basic, right, that the teachings of Jesus make clear that everyone deserves clean water, sufficient food, a safe place to live and work? Yet the headlines make clear that not only are these basics contested, but they are contested among those who profess of to be followers of Jesus. Join us on Sunday as we hear the clear testimony of scripture once again, and as we are reminded of the basic things in which God delights. Come prepared to be sent out to embody these basic teachings in faithful discipleship of Jesus of Nazareth.

Blessings, David
